Quick answer: If you live in an apartment, then you’ll probably see FTTB. Fibre-To-The-Building or Basement (FTTB) runs fibre to the connection point in multi-dwelling units such as apartments and then links to individual connections to each unit. NBN Co expects to connect over one million premises using FTTB services.
The FTTB system uses VDSL (vectored or enhanced DSL) technology that improves ADSL connections on existing phone lines in your building. VDSL is able to cancel the interference, or crosstalk, between the copper lines from the telephone exchange in order to speed up the transfer rate of internet traffic. While FTTB or VDSL can achieve speeds of up to 100 Mbps, like ADSL the further away your apartment is from your buildings communication room the slower your speed may be on the nbn™.
Most existing modems are not VDSL capable. If your place is being connected to the nbn™ via FTTB, we recommend you purchase a modem from Australia Broadband. All modems supplied by Australia Broadband are VDSL capable.
